STARTING PITCHERS
Lucas Giolito vs. Detroit Tigers
Stadium – Comerica Park
FanDuel = $9,800
DraftKings = $11,000
Giolito jumps out as the chalk pitcher of the night. He’s allowed at least six runs in three of his last eight starts, but they were tough matchups against the Cubs (twice) and Twins. He also allowed one or no runs in three of the other five games during that stretch. The Tigers have scored the fewest runs in baseball, so his upside here is off the charts when you also add in his 29.9 percent strikeout rate.
Spencer Turnbull vs. Chicago White Sox
Stadium – Comerica Park
FanDuel = $6,600
DraftKings = $7,000
Staying in this same game brings us to a viable tournament option in Turnbull, who is set to be activated off the IL. There haven’t been many bright spots for the Tigers this season, but Turnbull’s performance has been one of them. Despite the homer-happy state of affairs in baseball, Turnbull has only allowed 0.8 HR/9. Aside from their 10-run performance Sunday, the White Sox had only averaged 2.1 runs across their previous 10 contests. If you want to load up up top-tier hitters, taking a chance on Turnbull can help facilitate that.
CATCHER
Austin Romine vs. Gabriel Ynoa, Baltimore Orioles
Stadium – Oriole Park at Camden Yards
FanDuel = $2,600
DraftKings = $3,900
Ynoa hasn’t thrown more than 34 pitchers in any of his last five outings, so don’t expect him to pitch deep into this contest. The Orioles will be going with a bullpen approach, which could lead to plenty of runs for the Yankees despite the weakened state of their lineup. Romine might not be the sexiest of names, but he’s 10-for-29 (.345) with two home runs and two doubles over his last 10 games.
Others to consider: Travis d’Arnaud
FIRST BASE
Ji-Man Choi vs. Jacob Waguespack, Toronto Blue Jays
Stadium – Tropicana Field
FanDuel = $3,100
DraftKings = $3,900
The Rays are not shy about using platoons and currently deploy one at first base with Choi and Jesus Aguilar. Choi has certainly lived up to his end of the bargain with a .356 wOBA against right-handed pitchers. He’ll be facing an underwhelming one in Waguespack, who has a 4.55 FIP and a 1.40 WHIP to go along with an 18.5 percent strikeout rate.
Others to consider: Anthony Rizzo and Brandon Belt
SECOND BASE
Scooter Gennett vs. Erick Fedde, Washington Nationals
Stadium – Oracle Park
FanDuel = $2,600
DraftKings = $2,600
It’s been a lost season up to this point for Gennett, who hasn’t been able to get on track after missing the start of the year due to injury. After recording an OPS of at least .847 in back-to-back seasons, he has a meager .529 mark this year. If there is a bright side, it’s that it has dropped his price in DFS significantly. This could be just the matchup that he needs to have a productive night considering Fedde has allowed a .380 wOBA against left-handed hitters in his career.
Others to consider: Max Muncy and Rougned Odor
THIRD BASE
DJ LeMahieu vs. Gabriel Ynoa, Baltimore Orioles
Stadium – Oriole Park at Camden Yards
FanDuel = $4,200
DraftKings = $5,600
Where would the Yankees be without LeMahieu? Not only has he spent time playing first, second and third base, but he’s been spectacular at the plate with his 139 wRC+. He’s proven he hasn’t just been aided by his time playing at Coors Field, especially since his 17 home runs already mark a new career-high. There are enough viable cheap options at other positions to enable you to pay up to get LeMahieu into your entry.
Others to consider: Hunter Dozier and Eugenio Suarez
SHORTSTOP
Jose Iglesias vs. Taylor Cole, Los Angeles Angels
Stadium – Great American Ball Park
FanDuel = $2,500
DraftKings = $3,600
Cole will only serve as the opener for this game with left-hander Patrick Sandoval set to follow. Sandoval will be making his major league debut after recording an uninspiring 4.97 FIP and 1.97 WHIP at Triple-A. Iglesias doesn’t bring much power to the table, but he’s still managed to hit 21-for-70 (.300) with two home runs and three doubles over his last 22 games.
Others to consider: Xander Bogaerts and Didi Gregorius
OUTFIELD
J.D. Martinez vs. Mike Montgomery, Kansas City Royals
Stadium – Fenway Park
FanDuel = $4,200
DraftKings = $5,100
Martinez is another one of the big bats on this slate to strongly consider paying up for. Montgomery has continued to struggle since joining the Royals, allowing 10 runs over 11.1 innings. Martinez has another shot at 40 home runs this season and is crushing lefties with a 239 wRC+ against them.
Mike Yastrzemski vs. Erick Fedde, Washington Nationals
Stadium – Oracle Park
FanDuel = $3,000
DraftKings = $3,800
The Giants have to be excited about what they have seen from Yastrzemski during his first taste of action in the majors. It took him some time to get settled in, but he’s cranked things up by hitting 26-for-77 (.338) with five home runs and six doubles across his last 20 games. With how much Fedde has struggled against lefties, Yastrzemski makes a lot of sense at this reasonable price.
Aristides Aquino vs. Taylor Cole, Los Angeles Angels
Stadium – Great American Ball Park
FanDuel = $2,000
DraftKings = $3,600
Since Sandoval will likely pitch the bulk of the innings, the right-handed Aquino has a good chance of being in the starting lineup. He was impressive with a 142 wRC+ at Triple-A and hit a home run in just his third game Saturday against the Braves. At the minimum price on FanDuel, he’s someone to strongly consider in tournament play.
Others to consider: Aaron Judge and Phillip Ervin
