Pitchers

Luis Severino is going to be the pitcher to own on this slate. The Yankees are a huge -235 favorite and Severino faces the weakest lineup of the 4. The other game is also at Chase Field, so that’s not a spot you love to target pitchers in anyways. Severino is at home, in Yankee Stadium, facing a Twins lineup that can be taken advantage of by righties. Don’t get me wrong, the Twins are a string lineup and they aren’t one to be taken likely. However, this is the playoffs now, so the relativity scale is a bit different. The Twins K 22% of the time against righties and have posted an adequate .318 team wOBA. They’re worse on the road and Vegas has them with an implied team total under 3. As for Ervin Santana, I have no interest. I guess he could go out and dominate, but I’m willing to take the L if that happens. The Yankees are the top offense around and we’ll get to that in a second. Wrapping it up, Severino is the top option in all formats and Santana is probably the worst of the 4.

Hitters

With just 4 lineups on the slate, we can’t be picky. If you’re targeting Luis Severino, you might as well ignore the Twins. If you’re going off the board with a different pitcher, you should certainly have some correlation plays from Minnesota. Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario are the 2 best hitters against righties and an HR out of either of them wouldn’t be surprising in Yankee Stadium. The rest of the order is in play if you dislike Severino, but it’s not necessary. As for the Yankees side of the diamond, they’re my favorite offense on this mini-slate. Ervin Santana is not that good of a pitcher and he’s a guy that can be taken advantage of by both sides of the plate. He’s allowed a .301 wOBA on the year, which is good. However, a .246 BABIP suggests we have a lot more to the situation than that. He’s allowing a 37% hard contact rate and a 24% LD. Gary Sanchez is the top catcher on the slate and he should be close to 100% with the other options to choose from. Judge is another top play on the slate and it’ll just come down to whether or not you can afford him. Didi Gregorius and Brett Gardner are also right in that mix, so I like them in cash games as one of the last guys you fill-in. The bottom of the order should be RBI opportunities and you can take any of them in tournaments. To reiterate, we only have 4 teams to pick from, facing 4 decent or better pitchers, so you’re not going to be able to be very picky.

Colorado Rockies @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Match-up – Jon Gray Vs Zack Greinke
Park – Chase Field
Vegas – 8.5, ARI -167
Pitchers

If this game was in a neutral or pitcher-friendly ballpark, both of these pitchers would be a lot more interesting. Chase Field is the 2nd best park in baseball for hitting and these offenses can be lethal. With that being said, these guys are very talented and we can’t just ignore them because of the ballpark. For once, they’re both used to these conditions. Greinke has been dominant in Chase Field this year and Gray has been pretty impressive in Coors. Greinke is my 2nd favorite arm on this slate, though it’s by a healthy margin. He has been one of the better pitchers in baseball and it’s evident by his home numbers. He’s posted a .282 wOBA against both lefties and righties while striking out close to 10 batters per 9 innings. He’s an elite pitcher and you have to consider him for that sole fact. The argument against him is the Rockies lineup and their potency against righties. We’ll get to it. As for Jon Gray, I don’t have much interest. He is a very good pitcher, but he’s still young and I don’t think he has a leash longer than 1 run here. The Rockies have a decent bullpen and they will not want to fall behind against Greinke. This D-Backs lineup is too strong at home and I just see no reason to target Gray. However, I do like him more than Santana.

Hitters

There isn’t a single hitter in this game that isn’t at least a decent play. LIke I’ve said over and over, we don’t get to be picky on this one. We have 4 good pitchers and 4 good lineups to look at. In Chase Field, there’s nothing wrong with staking either or both of these teams. I definitely like the D-Backs a bit more and their insane 1-5. They are all cash game viable and will be a staple in cash games. The bottom of the D-Backs order (Iannetta, Drury) has a lot of boom/bust. Don’t hesitate on any of those guys if you think they will fall under 10 or 15% owned. As for the Rockies, they’re fine, but I won’t go searching them out. Gerardo Parra is probably my favorite as a decently priced OF’er with some upside. Guys like Arenado and Blackmon are phenomenal GPP plays, nut I’d certainly rather have some combo of Sanchez/Judge/Goldy/J.D. They are my priorities on this slate and targeting Greinke isn’t. All in all, this slate is tough. You never know what can happen in baseball and that’s only magnified in a 1-game playoff series. Good Luck!!

*STARTING PITCHERS*

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Lineup Stacks - Boston RedSox - Chris Sale

Chris Sale @ Toronto Blue Jays
Park – Rogers Centre
Opp implied total – 3.29

On the high-end, you have Chris Sale and Jake Arrieta. While Arrieta is great and he can throw a CGSO at any point, he’s no Chris Sale. Sale is one of the 3 best pitchers in baseball and should have no problem bouncing back after struggling last week against the Indians. They’ve owned him in his career and he didn’t show any signs of injury or fatigue. They were just hitting balls that most teams whiff on. When looking at the numbers, you’d think Sale is one of the best arms to walk this planet. He’s allowed just a .247 combined wOBA while striking out 12.77 batters per 9 innings. Sale and the Sox now move into The Rogers Centre to face off with the lowly Blue Jays. While they are better against lefties, a .321 wOBA and 22$ strikeout rate is nothing to be afraid of. Expect Sale to have another one of his typical starts where he goes 7+ innings, strikes out 9+, and gets the W. There is no pitcher on the slate that compares to Sale in safety, at least in my opinion.

Luke Weaver @ Milwaukee Brewers
Park – Miller Park
Vegas O/U – X

Even though we have a lot of games on this slate, pitching isn’t pretty in the slightest. Fortunately, we do have a couple options that stand out. On the lower end, it’s Luke Weaver. Weaver is a 1st round pick just a couple years back out of FSU. He hasn’t stopped dominating since and it looks like he doesn’t have any plans of slowing down. Albeit a very small sample size, Weaver has dominated at the pro level so far. He’s striking guys out at a 27% clip while holding both lefties and righties to a sub .310 wOBA. He’ll likely run into a few road blocks like most young arms do, but I don’t think it comes in the form of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers aren’t a “bad” offense, but they have a lot of holes. They strikeout 25.6% of the time and have trouble putting together big innings. I don’t think Weaver leaves with a clean slate here, but he should get 6 or 7 solid innings. At his price, you can’t ask for more.

Brian Dozier - MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Lineup Stacks - Lineuplab

Minnesota Twins Vs James Shields (White Sox)
Park – Progressive Field
Implied Total – 5.82

The Twins and James Shields just faced off in Shields’ last start, so it’ll be interesting to see how the Twins respond to a walking pitching machine they saw under a week ago. Typically, hitters gain the edge in this spot. With that being said, there’s no real merit in that. The real merit comes in James Shields being horrible. He’s a bottom 5 pitcher in the entire league and I’m not sure he’s mentally or physically capable of having a good start. At 35 years old, Shields has given up a .422 wOBA to lefties and a .300 to righties. You can definitely target the filler righties like Dozier or Buxton, but the real value comes in the left-handers. You then get to the White Sox bullpen, which is undoubtedly one of the worst. The Twins are an extremely safe offense and you can pencil in at least 4 or 5 runs here. The prices are solid and you should be able to fit 4 of them while also fitting Sale as an SP1.

Sneaky Stack – Eddie Rosario, Byron Buxton, Max Kepler, Eduardo Escobar

Houston Astros @ Martin Perez (Rangers)
Park – Minute Maid Park
Implied Total – X

There are some very nice offenses on this slate, but not many that you want to stack fully. The Astros are a team that can put up 10+ runs on any given night and the HR upside they possess in this match-up is hard to find. They will host the Rangers and Martin Perez, who is bad against righties. He has a huge HR problem and has had it for about 10 years. It’s going nowhere. Through 114 innings, Perez has allowed a .364 wOBA and 17 home runs. He is great against lefties, so I don’t see a reason to target those guys. With that being said, the combo of Altuve+Springer+Bregman is extremely dangerous and can bring you to the top of a tournament. I also don’t think the ‘Stros will be too highly owned. There are a lot of different options and I would think these guys come in around 15-20% owned.

Corey Kluber - MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Lineup Stacks

Corey Kluber Vs Boston Red Sox
Park – Progressive Field
Opp implied total – 3.14

We do have a few guys to pay up for, and they all make some sense. Corey Kluber comes in at number 1, even though his price is steep. Kluber has been one of the best pitchers in the league so far and would be in the Cy Young discussion if he didn’t miss a month. Kluber has posted a .250 combined wOBA while striking out over 12 batters per 9 innings. In other words, he is elite. Super elite. He now hosts the Boston Red Sox, who are an admittedly intimidating offense. However, when you dig in, you get a lineup that Corey Kluber can do real damage against. The 1,2, 5,7,8, and 9 hitters all hold 20%+ K rates, so go ahead and throw out the notion that the Red Sox don’t K. They absolutely do K and if there’s gonna be a guy to get them swinging, it’s Klubot. He’s easily the safest option on the board and will be in all of my cash games. With that being said, I completely understand pivoting down to Marcus Stroman or Luis Severino.

Luke Weaver Vs San Diego Padres
Park – Busch Stadium
Vegas O/U – 3.70

In cash games, stick to the 3 top-end arms. They are far above the rest in terms of safety. In tournaments, however, you can get a bit wild. We do have some offenses to pay up for, so there is merit to fading the high-end arm. You also see a 3.70 implied total from Vegas, which intrigued me a ton. That’s a number you see on a team that’s facing an ace. The Padres had a big night last night and I’d like to think the public will stay away from Weaver. He’s a first-round pick out of FSU and a guy that can throw the baseball. That might sound weird, but watch him pitch and you’ll know what I mean. This Padres order is absolutely atrocious and will only be able to fit 2 or 3 lefties. Weaver has dominated righties since entering the minors and profiles as a guy that K’s around 8-9 per 9 innings. He pitches better in Busch Stadium and should be able to have a solid outing against one of the worst teams around. I like him a hint more than Lance Lynn.

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Lineup Stacks - Brian Dozier

Minnesota Twins @ James Shields (White Sox)
Park – Great American Ballpark
Implied Total – 5.62

You know the drill. If James Shields is pitching, expect the opposing lineup to be here. Shields has allowed a .409 wOBA to righties and .308 to righties. That doesn’t mean fade the righties, however. He still gives up the long ball to them and you can also expect some varied bullpen arms. There isn’t much else to say about James Shields, besides the fact that he’s a pitching machine with legs. Lefties absolutely obliterate everything he tries and it’ll be fun to see him face off with some of these guys. Eddie Rosario is actually my favorite of the bunch and one of my top overall plays on the slate. The rest of the order is pretty spread out, so go wherever you would like. Eduardo Escobar and Max Kepler are interesting and way too cheap for the spot they are in. Don’t ignore the Twins offense when they’re expected to put up nearly 6 runs.

Houston Astros Vs Edwin Jackson (Nationals)
Park – Minute Maid Park
Implied Total – 5.20

Edwin Jackson hasn’t been horrible, so people may forget how horrible he is. He will return to his old ways very soon and there is no better match-up than the Houston Astros. If there is 1 team to demoralize a pitcher, it’s these guys. While they may not be the most talented offense in the league, they just don’t stop. You don’t get a break from 1-9 and as a bad pitcher, that’s tough You will often rely on 2 or 3 batters towards the bottom of the order to pick up your pitch count and confidence. Against the Astros, you don’t get that. In return, you see pitchers sweating bullets by the 3rd and facing Altuve with runners on the corners. Jackson has also given up a .370 wOBA since 2015, so he just stinks. The ‘Stros can go absolutely bonkers and we don’t really know where the HR’s will come from, so take an educated guess.

DraftKings / FanDuel MLB Lineup Picks for August 3, 2017

Welcome to another Thursday in daily fantasy baseball. Today we have a split slate and with just three early games, I will be looking at my top pitcher and stacks from the 10-game main slate. Let’s take a look.

Starting Pitchers

 

Colin McHugh
Opponent – vs. TB
Park – Minute Maid Park (Pitcher Friendly)
Vegas Favorite (HOU -150)
Vegas Total (9.5)

My top pitcher of the night when factoring matchup, Vegas, and PTS/$ value is Colin McHugh. He made his first start of the season July 22nd after missing the first four months due to an elbow injury. He was looking good early but slipped and ended up giving up four earned runs. In his second start in Detroit, he was fantastic going six innings allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out seven and walking just one batter. While the Rays can be a pesky team with some power upside, they do have the second-most strikeouts in the league(1052) and have seen it get worse lately striking out 26.5% of the time over the past 14 days. The best part is you can use McHugh as an SP2 on DraftKings at just $7,500 and is likely low owned on FanDuel with Rick Porcello (-250) coming at a $100 discount.

Also consider: Alex Wood (LAD)

 

Top Stacks

DraftKings FanDuel MLB Lineup Picks - Baltimore Orioles - LineupLab

Baltimore Orioles & Detroit Tigers Game Stack

I absolutely love this game offensively from both sides tonight. The Orioles are currently -135 favorites at home in a game with the highest total and we get two pretty awful pitchers facing off. The O’s will face Matt Boyd who doesn’t necessarily give up a ton of home runs(10% HR/FB rate) but has given up three or more earned runs in 10 straight starts. The Tigers get the better power upside matchup vs. Chris Tillman who has been a punching bag all season. He saw his ERA drop to 7.65 after giving up eight earned runs in his last start and best of all, he has given up at least one home run in nine of his last 10 starts.

Orioles Players to Stack – Adam Jones, Manny Machado, Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop, Wellington Castillo

Tigers Players to Stack – Jim Adduci, Ian Kinsler, Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton

 

 

Minnesota Twins vs. A.J. Griffin

This stack is likely to be low owned due to some rain concerns(40% chance) and the fact the Twins offense just hasn’t been that great this season. I like their upside tonight facing A.J. Griffin who is making his return from an intercostal sprain(chest) that caused him to sit on the DL since the end of May. Before going down, he was having a rough time of it giving up 17 earned runs over 9.2 innings(3 starts) including eight home runs. Until I see him fully regain his form, I will target him for big upside no matter who the team is. Tonight it’s the Twins.

DraftKings / FanDuel MLB Lineup Picks for July 06, 2017

Thursday brings us a split slate and with four games early it leaves us with a nice sized seven-game main slate. This is where we will turn our attention in the following article as I cover my favorite pitchers and top stack of the night.


DraftKings FanDuel MLB Lineup Picks - Lineup Lab - Chris Sale - Daily Fantasy Baseball Picks

Starting Pitchers

Chris Sale

Vegas Favorite (BOS -160)
Vegas Total (7.0)

He comes at a heavy cost once again but is the clear choice for CY Young in the American League if the award were given out at the All-Star Break. He has completely dominated in his first season with the Rex Sox with a 2.61 ERA that is backed by a 2.70 xFIP but for fantasy, the biggest factor has been the elite 12.4 K/9 rate and 16% swinging strike rate. To put that into perspective for those who aren’t familiar with the swinging strike rate stat, there are only 32 qualified pitchers with over a 10% rate and only three(Sale, Scherzer, Kluber) over 15% in all of baseball. Tonight he faces a Rays team that has been much worse vs. left-handed pitching with a wOBA 36 points lower and a 26.5% strikeout rate that trails only the Texas Rangers vs. southpaws. Pay the steep price and find value to surround him with.

Gio Gonzalez
Opponent –  vs. ATL
Park – Nationals Park
Vegas Favorite (-160)
Vegas Total (9.0)

If you are looking to save some salary and upgrade some bats, there is a case to be made for Gio in all formats tonight. The Nationals are at home and the same -160 favorite as the Red Sox and while Gio doesn’t provide near the upside as Sale, he comes at a $2K+ discount which goes a long way if there is a lack of value popping up when lineups are released. Gio has also been having a terrific season despite losing two straight starts. First of all, in those two losses he allowed just one earned run in each and over the course of the season has only allowed over three earned runs twice in 17 starts. He does provide strikeout upside with 8+ in four of his last five and carries an 8.7 K/9 rate into tonight’s matchup with the Braves.

Stack of the Night

Minnesota Twins vs. Dylan Bundy (BAL)

The Twins currently sit with the second highest implied runs of all 14 teams tonight. It starts with the splits as they have been much better against right-handed pitching with a wOBA 24 points higher and wRC+ 16 points higher. What really tips the scales in their favor is the matchup as they face Dylan Bundy who has been downright terrible lately after a strong start to the season in April. He has given up five home runs in his last two starts and has now given up at least one home run in 11 straight and 12 of his last 13 starts. For fantasy, this is exactly we are looking for as home runs pay the bills. Load up on Twins tonight.

Daily Fantasy Lineup Picks - Jose Berrios - Lineup Lab

Starting Pitchers

Jeff Samardzija @ Atlanta Braves
Park – SunTrust Park

We have a big main slate with a whole lot of average pitchers. While we have an ace in Carlos Carrasco, he’s facing the Orioles in Camden Yards and hasn’t been the same pitcher as of late. He’s leaving pitches in the zone and it’s resulting in a higher than ever hard contact rate. Instead, we’re going to move down a bit and take a look at Jeff Samardzija. Samardzija hasn’t been amazing this year, but he’s been as expected. He eats up innings and does a good job of limiting opposing offenses to just 2 or 3 runs at most. He will get his 7 or 8 strikeouts and work his way into plenty of wins. He faces a very poor Braves team, that happens to be without their only ++ hitter, Freddie Freeman. Since Freeman got injured, the Braves have ranked 28th in baseball against righties with a .294 wOBA. There is literally nobody to be afraid of and it just comes down to how well Samardzija can pitch. While cash games are in question as a whole on this slate, this is your best option as a whole.

Jose Berrios Vs Chicago White Sox
Park – Progressive Field

Jose Berrios has been very good. He was one of the top prospects in all of baseball for a few years and has already shown why. He’s acted like a prime number 2 this year, usually going around 7 and allowing 1 or 2 runs. Berrios has been absolutely dominant against both sides of the plate in his 8 starts, sporting a .265 combined wOBA. He’s striking out over 8.5 batters per 9 innings and has posted a very strong 0.8 HR/9. He’s also been extremely consistent, which is rare to see out of a 23-year-old. Berrios has gone at least 6 innings in all but 1 start, in which he went 5 innings. This kid is special and will be a pitcher we target for a long time. He is however very young and he can still implode at any time. Fortunately, he’s facing off with the White Sox. They have been one of the worst teams all year long and hold the 4th lowest wOBA on the road in all of the majors. Berrios has plenty of opportunities here, but it really just comes down to whether he can keep the ball in the zone. Nobody on this White Sox team is going to battle and put up consistent at-bats in Progressive Field.


Daily Fantasy Lineup Picks - Gary Sanchez - Lineup Lab

Offensive Stacks

New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels (Ricky Nolasco)
Park – Yankee Stadium

This offense is pretty easy to love tonight. When initially looking at the slate, they stand out like a sore thumb. When any team holds an implied run total over 6 runs and that team is outside of Coors Field, you must take notice. The Yankees are in that spot tonight and I find myself thinking they may be in that spot somewhat often with how their offense is rolling. They face off with arguably the worst pitcher on the entire slate. So far in 2017, Ricky Nolasco has managed to sport a .386 wOBA against righties and a .357 to lefties. He’s also allowed an insane 21 home runs in less than 21 innings. Yes, you read that correctly. Both Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez are hitting home runs every night and both look like the next Babe Ruth. If you’re stacking the Yankees, you play them both. You can then go a lot of different ways. Matt Holliday deserves a lot of consideration and hits righties extremely well. Starlin Castro and Aaron Hicks are both solid, but should be highly owned and aren’t must plays. Personally, I will have a ton of exposure to the “main stack” in both cash games and tournaments. The Yankees are very safe tonight and if they go down in flames to Ricky Nolasco, I’ll take the loss and move on.

St. Louis Cardinals @ Philadelphia Phillies (Nicholas Pivetta)
Park – Citizens Bank Park

The Cardinals are a pretty weird team to target as a stack. it’s always tough to figure out what you do with guys like Yadier Molina, Kolten Wong, and Paul DeJong. Statistically, they can hit home runs. However, they don’t aim for the fences and often find themselves labeled as “boring” or as having “no ceiling”. Instead, I like to look at these guys as under-owned. You can get these lower in the order bats at a much lower ownership and if they happen to drive in some runs, you’re in a splendid spot. The Cardinals are facing off with the Phillies and Nick Pivetta tonight. Pivetta has been atrocious against both sides of the plate, holding a .361 combined wOBA.
