How to use FGA & FG% for DFS (NBA)

Finding highly accurate shooters is only part of the DFS equation for NBA contests. Fanduel & Draftkings award players very nicely for rebounds, assists, blocks, & steals. So more action around the rim is going to drive more of this, but specifically rebounds, assists, and points.

Field Goal Percentage (FG%)

Field Goal Percentage is the number of field goals successfully made divided by the number of field goals attempted. The higher the FG%, the more accurate the player. The more accurate, the more points. Pretty easy. Obviously we want to spot players who consistently sink baskets and put up a lot of points. However, don’t forget to glance at actual points or FGA’s too. A player can go 3 for 4 and have a 75% FG%, but that is still only 3 baskets.

Field Goal Attempts (FGA)

A Field Goal Attempt is any attempted 2pt or 3pt shot. FGA’s do not include free throws. Why do we care about FGA and not just a high FG%? We want a good combination of both high FG% and high FGA for 2 reasons. First, this clearly means that a player is accurate and takes a lot of shots. Also, a high FGA player is interesting to us because more attempts means more action around the rim and hence more opportunities for rebounds, blocks, fouls (FT’s), assists, and overall a higher pace of play.
